~The End~ Chapter 1

warnings:  dark, possible angst, religious somewhat
Deep in the underground caverns all around the world, the clanging of metal and the echo of marching resonate in the earth.  In the last few months, there has been great unease in the subterranean.  Moles emerged running aimlessly onto open roads.  Sewer rats scoung the city in ever increasing numbers.  They are the only reason the public is starting to take notice of their surroundings.  But it is not enough......

~Giudizio Highschool~

"Check out the stocks on RATaway.  I knew I should have got in on that!"

"Whatever man.  You don't got any money."

Nobody gave the increasing number of rodents a thought.  Everyone blamed it on public sanitation or the lack there of.  It became a joke, a reason for politicians to boost new laws.  Not a single person took the time to check what was going on below the ground.  Right under their feet.

"Aaaaah!  Why are the topics in this school so boring!" Duo sighed, hopping on top of his desk.  His long brown hair had now been braided, it's length rivaling those of the female population.  Dressed in black jeans and leather, the boy's bright blue eyes that shone almost purple was a great contrast to his dark attire.

"The rats are afraid of something."  Coming up to sit on the desk beside him was another young lad, dressed casually in blue jeans and a chrisp white shirt.  He gave his spiky brown bangs a toss to get then out his eyes before crossing his arms infront of his chest.   "Animals are more sensitive than humans.  There must be a reason why they're running all over town."

"Does your mind ever stray from the animals?"   Arms also crossed, Wufei leaned against the window peering over his own shoulder to scan the scene below.  Dressed in the traditional white robes of the Chinese, his curtain of shoulder length black hair was a gentle contrast to the power that radiated from within.  Eyes not moving from it's glance out the window, he ignored the others as he watched a girl walk steadily into the building.  Dressed in similarily obvious chinese clothing, the girl's long dark hair, set in two ponytails on either side of her head, was also a soft contrast to the hard edge that she carried about her.

"Watching her again?"  Heero asked as he took a spot beside Wufei by the window.  The latter made no response, opting to continue his observation silently.  Duo and Trowa enchanged looks as they too stayed quiet, small knowing grins on their faces.  But as it wasn't like Duo to stay quiet for too long, he had to add in a little quip here and there.

"Ah yes.  Love does bring down the strongest of men."

".........."

Several giggles erupted behind them but the boys payed the girls no attention. It had become repetive and boring over the years.  Tired of the names given to them by jealous boys in the class or people in general, they had eventually come up with a name for themselves.  The Four Knights abbreviated K4.  But sometimes, people would mistake the 'K' to be Four Kings.  Either way, the meaning never strayed too far from the truth.  The school was their kingdom, the students their people, and the teachers their advisors.
"Hey check it out.  Some weird guy by the gates."  Sliding off the desk, Duo pointed outside to the cold iron bars by the entrance.  The others turned to look but saw nothing out of the ordinary.

"What's so special about Silverman?  He's always late."

"No!  There was somebody there!  Some guy, *or* girl in this white...thing.  It was like fluttering.  Looked almost like a ghost."

"I didn't see anything.  Did you?"

"No.  You must have been imagining things Duo."

The teacher stepped into the classroom and the others took their seats, but Duo kept staring out the window, lightly scratching his head.

"...I swear I saw something."

As the school settled in, playing the national anthem followed by the resounding screech of chairs being pulled, two feet landed softly on it's roof.  Covered by a billowing white coat, the rest of the figure was completely hidden.  The cloak itself was a work of art.  It's edges decorated by a ribbon of crimson silk.  Two, also red gothic embroidered crosses, decorated the large flaps that covered the chest and shoulders.

It is time.

A pale hand carrying a golden compass emerged from the billowing white.  Like a musical pocket watch, a soft melody lifted from the delicate compass.  The figure moved until he stood directly in the middle of the building that stood in the middle of Giudizio's campus.  He turned to face north, then the hand dissapeared into the confines of his cloak again.

Stop.

Within the brick walls that surrounded the highschool campus, all life seemed to stand still.  The birds stop singing, the beetles stopped chirping, and even the clouds seems to cease its movement.  There was no wind, like the calm before a hurricane.
And in the centre of it all, the figure stood, arms resting at his side, palms facing forward.  In the silence that engulfed the exterior of the school, a single voice sounded.  Deaf to those within the building, but echoing to the world beyond.
"I take the power in my hands
From air and fire, and water and land.
Power of the angels and divinity
Moves and pulsates, the energy in me.

I build, I birth, I bring form.
I raise with might and energy storm."
Lightning thundered.  With immense power, a whirlwind began to form.  It gathered dark, rumbling storm clouds that covered the sun.  The entire area was suddenly enveloped in darkness, not one ray of light able to force its way through the clouds.  Great bolts of lightning flashed and roared in the sky.  Arms now raised to the heavens, the figure stood, cloak billowing madly.  The rounds of lightning touched down on the surrounding rooftops, the rods practically exploding from the incredible energy. Closer and closer to the figure they struck like sharks circling their prey.  Then as the clouds seem to gather their energy to hit the lone target in the center, the figure threw his arms down.  In a blinding flash, the lightning came, bursting trees in all four corners of the school.  But the energy would not die. Instead, it grew.  Brighter and brighter as it ran along the ground.  Crackling in beautiful purple, blue, and white light.  It snaked around the school surrounding it.  And only from where the lone figure stood could one see the pattern that it took.  A huge circle of electricity now surrounded the school grounds.  But with another great burst of light, a surge of energy leaped from the circle, running like mad fire across the ground.  It weaved and turned and crossed each other until a penticle was created inside the circle.

Thunder roared and rain started to pour.  It pelted the windows with such intensity it could have broken glass.  Again the white cloaked figure brought his arms forward, towards the northern point.
"I shape, I build the ultimate power.
From me blooms, a perfect flower.
Of strength..
Of healing..
I reign."
On the edges of the magic circle where the trees had been struct down at the four corners of the school, a flower bloomed in its place.  Sprouting from the earth, nourished by the rain, each grew and blossemed.  When the flowers reached their full bloom, the rain stopped.  Fading as quickly as it had come, the circle dissappeared.  Within seconds the clouds had scattered, and it was once again a lively, sunny day.

The bell sounded lunch time, and students quickly dispersed into their favourite area.  There was a general rush to the cafeteria hall, since there was limited food that the student body deemed edible.  The K4 however, were the only ones to take their time, confident that they didn't have to 'fight' for their food.

"That was some crazy weather."  Duo quipped, trying to start up a conversation.  It was either him, or silence and he was much preferred.

"I think some trees got hit.  There was some loud cracking."  Wufei replied as they stroled along.

"My hair feels like it's standing up."

"You're hair's always standing up Trowa."

They boys chatted idly making their way to the line up.  They didn't actually 'line up' like the others.  Instead, they felt free to barge in infront of everyone else, nobody wanting to or brave enough to tell them to 'get in line'.   The guard at the door let them in with a nod, and the boys set about picking whatever they fancied.  The food wasn't great but the sandwiches were good.  Everything from tuna to grilled chicken and they took the best that particular day offered.

"What are you eating Heero?"

"Steak and cheese."

"I'm going for Tuna."   Grabbing his sandwich, Duo bounded to peer at what the others where having.   Wufei had opted for a hefty slice of lasagne, while Trowa was still nosing about.  Naturally, he offered to lend the spiky-haired boy a hand.

"What are you looking for buddy?"

"Grilled chicken."

"hm......I think they're out....."    Standing on his tippy toes, Duo checked around to see what the other students were eating.  Near the cashier line, he spotted his prey.  A fragile looking teen, properly holding his tray, standing straight as a board.  These guys were the easiest to handle.  He gave Trowa a nudge with his elbow and pointed to the smaller blonde boy that was their intended target.  Trowa nodded his agreement and the two stalked over, cool and intimidating.

In a quick sweep, Duo had managed to wedge himself between the target and the rest of the line in front while Trowa rounded the back.  Surrounded, there was nowhere for the boy to escape to.  Putting on his customary smile, Duo looked directly into the boy's eyes.

"Hey there little buddy.  Whatcha got there?"

The blonde boy blinked at him, not knowing what to make of the situation and utterly confused.  This stumped the Duo for a second, but then he burst out laughing.  "OH I get it!  You're new.  Figures.  Little all googly eyed new guys are so damn cute.  Don't know what the HELLs going on.  Right T?"

The target turned around to face his other opponent.  Standing almost a head taller than himself, the green-eyed boy said nothing and merely stood there, eyeing the smaller boy from the corner of his eyes showing his superiority.  Putting his hands on the boy's shoulder, Duo turned him back around and pointed at his sandwich.

"You got the last grilled chicken."

"Yes."  The blonde boy replied without so much as blinking.  This definately did not sit well with the undesputed ones  and the rest of them were soon crowding around the kid.

"Yeah here's a crash course to Giudizio little man.  We got dibs on ...well...everything.  That means, find yourself another lunch. K?"

With that, the sandwich was removed from the blinking boy's tray and tossed back to the other knights behind.  The K4 was about to leave the stunned boy as is, when a shock of black zipped by him and a loud 'OW' sounded from the back.  Before the blonde boy could turn around to see what was happening, a soft hand landed on his shoulder and his sandwich was placed back in its rightful position.

"Meiran.  What the hell do you think you're doing?"

Intense deep brown eyes stared down the blonde's bright blue.  The girl, practically the same height as him, looked the boy over, narrowing her eyes when she was finished.  She was beautiful with sharp features and a dangerous aura.

"Don't let them push you around.  They're nobody."  Crossing her arms, she stood tall and faced the four boys with obvious distaste.  "If taking advantage of poor helpless newbies makes you boys feel like men, then you are even more pathetic than I ever thought possible."

"What does it matter.  It's just a sandwich.  'Fei man, mind your woman."

"Don't call me his woman.  He is not worthy."

Emerging from behind the other three, Wufei came the stand before the girl.  The same one that he had been observing from the window.  His face was an absolute blank, and the blonde boy couldn't for the life of him figure out what was going on.

"I had nothing to do with this.  He can starve for all I care."

Trowa gave him an indignant look but kept any comments to himself.  Meiran ignored him, keeping her attenthion on Wufei.

"Watching doesn't make you any better.  Don't think you are any different than the trash that is your friends."

"Harsh words.  As my fiance you dishonour me by disgracing my friends.  Don't forget that I am a direct reflection onto you.  This makes you, very undesireable."  Tray in hand, Wufei walked away without so much as a second glance back.  The others followed suit, leaving the pair still standing in line.  Although facing her back, the boy could imagine the look on Meirans face.  If anything her clenched fist and practically trembling body was a good indicater.

"You.....two...are..engaged?"

He could see her hands clench tighter as she stiffened, tilting her head slightly.

"Through no choice of my own."

Taking a deep breath, she turned around to face the boy, who still stood tray in hand.  They looked at each other for a while, each own's mind running its course.  Finally, the boy's face broke into a friendly smile that lit up his face, if not the entire room.

"Thank you for your help.  Can I buy you lunch?"

Meiran stared at him for a while, blinking as if she had expected him to be angry with her for her association.  Eventually, she too broke into a smile, the action almost foreign to her face.

"Thank you.  My name is Meiran Long.  As you heard, I am Wufei Chang's fiance.  It's alright if you don't talk to me.  I understand."  She turned away as a signal for the boy to take his leave, but he stayed put, the smile never wavering from his face.  When he didn't speak, she took it to mean that he wasn't about to leave.

".........What is your name?"

"Me?  Oh where are my manners.  I'm sorry.  How do you do?  My name is Quatre Raberba Winner.  This is my first day."

"......well Quatre .......welcome to Giudizio."
