| Chapter 3 1. Katzckinsky has a reputation of being the smartest and knowing how to trade. Also he has a reputation of finding food. 2. Kropp thinks that a war should be fought in an arena. In the arena ministers and generals of the two countries armed with clubs should fight each other. Who ever survives, their country wins. He thinks it should be like a festival. Also this way the wrong people are not fighting. 3. Hommelstoss�s drill exercise was getting ready for a pass through the subway which they practiced in the barracks. They would stand next to there beds and on command they would get underneath the opposite bed like they were subways. 4. Hommelstoss�s profession before the war was working as a postman. 5. Kropp says that little men like Hommelstoss who get stars or stripes become very different men like they have swallowed concrete. 6. Kropp�s reason for making drill exercises so hard is because once someone gets power they leap at every advantage to abuse it. |

| Chapter 4 1. The earth is very important to a soldier because the earth is a kind of security. Soldiers use the earth for huddling down and dodging bullets. Earth is a kind of protection to the soldier. 2. The front line has a strong influence to the soldiers. The soldiers become more immune to war and get used to the bombs and gun noises. 3. The first comic relief is when Paul explains the pain a soldier has to go through when he is shot in the butt. The second comic relief is when the young new recruit wets his pants because of fear and becomes embarrassed. 4. The death of the horses represents the soldiers because the horses don�t deserve to die just like the soldiers. They had nothing to do with the war. In the same way soldiers didn�t deserve to die either. They only went to war because they were mistakenly encouraged and didn�t really know why they were fighting. 5. The value of human life has greatly changed. Basically to the soldiers it is better to kill someone suffering than to try to help them stay alive. 6. This is an important chapter in the novel because it shows the reality of war. It shows the suffering and pain the soldiers have to go through. |
