Question Number 3, 4 and 8
3.  What was the authors attitude towards Farqhar and what was the authors views about war?

The author has a good attitude towards farqhar.  He shows that farqhar is patriotic.  Farqhar may be somewhat foolish andbrave.
The authorsview of war is that it is an adventurous and somewhat villainous in the waythat even bad things are fair in war.  Wefind this when the author states that All is fair in love and war.  This shows us that he thinks that everythingis fair in love and war.
4.  A)  What was ironic and suprising about Farquhar's longing "for the larger life of a soldier?"

B)  What was ironic about "all is fair in love and war?"

(A)  The thing that is ironic of the story that was surprising, about
Farquhar's longing for "the larger life of a soldier" is that he thinks that
he wants to be a soldier, he thinks that he will be known and they will be
honored. But really the soldiers aren't that great they go out and fight and
it is very brutal. This is ironic because at the end of the story he dies
from a soldier and the whole group.
(B)  If "all is fair in love and war" then Farquhar would be alive because the "spy" or soldier tricked Farquhar into going to the bridge. The "soldier" was wearing a Confederates uniform so
Farquhar believed him. This is ironic because the first time that he tries to
be heroic or even to fight for his country. He is caught and killed.
8.  How does Bierce's use of flashback contribute to the effectiveness of the story?

The flashback contributes the effectiveness of the story because it provides the reader with a background for Farquhar and his purpose for being at the bridge. It lets the reader realize that Farquhar was tricked and was, in fact, a good citizen trying to help out the south and it's cause. This realization makes the reader-who might have previously taken the north's side, to feel, at least a little, sorry for the southerner. This increases the effectiveness once again because it makes the reader want to believe that his dream is real and when it's not they are jerked back to reality.
