The last sentence of the story was ironic because this was another place the reader found out Vera was lying. This sentence basically meant that she was good at making up stories in short notice. She knew the real reason that Mr. Nuttel ran away, but she made up a story almost instantly that everyone else believed. But, of course the reader did not believe this because he/she just probably found out Vera was lying.
