3. Find two other ironic statements in the story.
#1 ironic statement-The child was staring out through the open window with a dazed horror in her eyes.
This sentence was ironic because all along Vera was lying. She knew all along she was lying. She knew that Mrs. Sappleton's husband and two brothers were alive, but when they came walking towards the house she pretended that they had come from the dead or something just to scare Mr. Nuttel.
#2 ironic statement-"I expect it was the spaniel," said the niece calmly; "he told me he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the Ganges by a pack of pariah dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures snarling and grinning and foaming just above him. Enough to make anyone lose their nerve."
This statement is ironic because this is basically when you find out Vera was lying to Mr. Nuttel the whole time. She makes up another lie explaining why Mr. Nuttel had run away. She said it was because of the dog, but it was really because he thought they were ghosts. |
