Ron Patterson's "Fiesta Popper"

Hook: Mustad #4 Stinger Hook
Head: Rainy Foam (cut to size)
Eyes: Plastic Doll Eyes
Legs: Round Rubber Silli-legs
Hackle: Olive Grizzly Hackle
Tail: 2 Olive Grizzly Hackles, 2 White Hackles, Krystal Flash
Thread: Yellow Monocord

Tying Directions:

  1. Head Prep:  Cut cylindrical foam into 1/2" lengths.  Use needle to create hole for sliding the foam over the hook eye.  Color foam with Sharpie permanent markers.  Mount to hook shank as follows:  Cut small foam strip and tie to hook shank where you want the popper head to stop.  Create a thread "dam" ball around this small piece of foam.  Use super glue to coat the shank from eye to the foam ball.  Push popper head over hook eye driving back of popper onto thread "dam" ball.  Center popper on shank.  By pushing the popper head onto the dam ball... you lock the popper onto the shank to minimize turning of the head.  Tie in thread head behind hook eye and Superglue.  Coat body of popper with head cement (or Sally Hanson Hard as Nails).  Let dry, coat with Wet-n-Wild Nail Polish (the type I used has small metallic flakes in it).  Let dry.
  2. Tie in Krystal flash.  Tie in the two White hackles.  Tie in the two Olive Grizzly Hackles.  Tie in single Olive hackle at tail and tightly palmer forward to rear of popper head.  Tie off and cement.
  3. Legs:  Use needle to insert legs into foam popper body, draw through with needle.  Use drop of head cement at joint of legs and popper body to hold legs in body.
  4. Eyes:  Superglue eyes to popper head.  Coat completely with head cement for add strength.
