Jim Smith's "Carter's Dragon"

Hook Size 6-12
Thread Black 6/0
Tail Small bunch of black rabbit fur
Body Black chenille, vernille or mohair yarn
Collar Soft hackle, either black, grizzly or olive
Beard Black Krystal Flash
Eye Black or silver dumbbell or bead chain eyes

Tying Directions:

  1. Tie in a bunch of black rabbit fur for the tail. 
  2. Tie in the chenille or vernille and wrap the thread to the eye of the hook.
  3. Tie in the dumbbell eyes.
  4. Wrap the chenille up to the eyes and tie off. Clip excess chenille.
  5. Tie in a soft hackle feather by its tip. Make two wraps for the collar, tie off and clip excess.
  6. Tie in a small bunch of black Krystal Flash on the underside of the hook in front of the eyes. The Krystal Flash should reach to the end of the hook.

Fishing Tips:

Fish this pattern by letting it sink for about 15 seconds. Then make very quick 3" strips with a two second pause between strips. This is an excellent bass or bluegill fly. When using it for winter bluegill, hold on, because bass and crappie find it equally irresistible.
