Len Schattler's "Bitch Creek Nymph"

Hook Mustad 3366, size 4
Thread 3/0 or A, color to match body, or as desired
Body Chenille or Ultra-Chenille….2 colors as desired
Thorax Chenille or Ultra-Chenille….1 of the body colors
Legs Hackle wrapped around thorax….color to match one of the body colors
Tail Rubber Sili Leg material….color as desired
Antennae Rubber Sili Leg material…color as desired
Underbody (optional) Lead wire

Tying Directions:

  1. Tie on thread at front of hook if using lead wire weight…at start of bend if not.
  2. Tie in 6-8 wraps of lead wire, and overwrap with thread, leaving bobbin at rear of hook. Apply drop of super-glue to lead wraps.
  3. Tie in rubber tail and secure it about half way down the hook bend.
  4. Advance thread to half way between hook eye and bend.
  5. Tie in lighter colored chenille on far side of hook. Darker color on near side of hook.
  6. Wrap thread around chenille all the way to the tail, and secure with 2 half hitches.
  7. Begin Tiger Weave (See instructions by Al Campbell entitled Tiger Weave Bitch Creek Nymph at flyanglersonline.com/flytying/advanced/), and advance to approximately half way toward eye.
  8. Bring thread forward on a straight line and secure chenille with several wraps.
  9. Cut off lighter color chenille…leave darker color for continuing the thorax.
  10. Tie in hackle legs where chenille ends, and advance thread to the eye.
  11. Wrap remaining chenille forward and secure with several wraps.
  12. Palmer hackle legs forward and tie off behind eye (don’t crowd!)
  13. Tie in rubber antennae.
  14. Whip finish and apply cement to windings.
  15. Snip thread strand running from back of hook to where chenille tied off in center, if desired.

The Tiger Weave as demonstrated by Al Campbell gives this nymph a nice effect, and can be used for a similar effect on other flies. It is simple to learn, but takes a little practice to get it right. I’ve tied all of mine on bass-sized hooks, and added lead weight to get them down where the fish are! Good luck!
