Ed Conley's "Menson Double Humpy"

Hook Mustad 3665A, or curved Mustad 80050 (size 4 – 10)
Thread 6/0 orange, and .006 mono thread (optional)
Tail natural elk hair, stacked
Humps two strips of 1/8 inch foam (gray, brown, or black / actually any color that you prefer)
Body orange floss
Wing two clumps of elk hair, stacked
Legs rubber leg material
Hackle blue dunn (original is ginger)
Head thread and trimmed foam

Tying Instructions:

  1. Tie on thread 1/8 of a shank length back from eye, wrap to the barb and back.
  2. Clean and stack a clump of elk hair for the tail. Tie it on the hook so it extends 1 ½ hook gaps behind the bend. The elk hair should cover the complete length of the shank, leaving a small space at the eye.
  3. Cut 2 strips of 1/8 inch foam equal in width to the hook gap, length should be 2 ½ shanks. Tie both directly on top of the tail hair starting just behind the eye and wrapping to the end of the shank. Wrap the thread forward to a point just behind the eye and attach the floss and tie off at the head. I like to tie on monofilament thread at this point, but you can use the orange thread throughout the whole pattern if you like. Move the thread to a point 1 ½ hood gaps forward of the barb.
  4. Pull the first foam strip up and over and bind it onto the shank. Attach sections of leg material to each side, then pull the 2nd foam strip up and over and tie down. Bind a stacked clump of elk hair into position to form the first wing. Wrap several turns of hackle and tie off.
  5. Wrap tying thread forward, stopping just short of the eye and repeat items in step 4. Whip finish and cement as needed. Trim the foam strips to shape in front of the hook eye.

TYING TIPS:

  1. Mono thread really lets you crank the foam down to the shank.
  2. After tying in the elk hair wing, leave the butts long, take a secondary bobbin and make loose turns around the elk hair butts, the two rear facing legs, and the foam segment to the rear of the wing. This makes the hackling step a lot neater and easier. Just undo thread after hackling.
