Roger Cotner's "Bluegill TrickrTreat"

Hook: Mustad 3906B, #10-12
Thread: Black Danville's Flymaster Plus, Size A
Tail: Orange hackle fibers
Rib: Fine gold wire
Body: Rear half is Danville #12 Bright Orange 4-strand floss; front half is fine black chenille
Hackle: Orange dyed saddle hackle, wet fly quality
Head: Whip finish black thread

Tying Directions:

  1. Attach tying thread to rear of hook above the point and barb.
  2. Tie in orange hackle barbs stripped from an orange dyed saddle hackle, not hardly the length of the body.
  3. Tie in the fine gold wire for the rib above the tie-in spot of the tail.
  4. Tie in the 4-strand bright orange floss over the tail and gold wire for the rib. Advance the tying thread to the mid-point of the hook in closed, smooth wraps, covering any excess floss.
  5. Separate one strand of the floss and keep it aside for now. Use the other three strands to wrap a fairly full tapered body on the rear half of the hook and secure the floss down with three wraps of thread. Now use the last strand of floss to even out any irregularities in the rear half of the body and secure it down with two - three wraps of tying thread.
  6. Tie in the fine black chenille over the spot where the floss is tie down. Advance the tying thread to within 1/8" of the hook's eye. Now wrap the fine black chenille forward for the front half of the body. Secure it down with three - four wraps of tying thread.
  7. Now wrap the fine gold wire forward in even wraps over the floss and the chenille and secure it down with two - three wraps of thread. I always double the wire back over itself and use a wrap or two of thread to lock it in.
  8. Tie in a fairly wide, webby orange dyed saddle hackle at the front of the fine black chenille part of the body. Take two turns of the hackle, secure it down with three - four wraps of thread, and trim any excess hackle.
  9. Whip finish the tying thread for the fly's head and 'yer ready to go!

Notes:

This fly was "invented" by Gary Yaden and is a very successful fly.
