| The story of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham is about a happy family, headed by Yashovardhan Raichard (Amitabh Bachchan) and his loyal wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan). The couple has raised their two sons with tender love and care. The elder boy, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) shares a very special relationship with his mother, whilst Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) is more of a daddies boy. |

| The family has a huge secret. Yashovardhan and Nandini only have one real son (Rohan), whilst Rahul was adopted at an early age - something he discovered at the tender age of eight. However this subject is rarely talked about within the family because both brothers are treated equally. |
| Its love at first sight when Rahul spots the beautiful Anjali (Kajol), who is a sweet and simple girl who returns the affection shown by Rahul. The lovebirds marry although Yashovardhan doesn't really approve of his new daughter-in-law. When Anjali moves into the house the tension increases and Rahul becomes conscious of the fact that he isn't a true member of this family. His relationship with his father, who he has always loved unconditionally, is jeopardised and Rahul decides its time to move out. |

| Nandini and Rohan are particularly heartbroken when they hear Rahul's decision. The pain becomes too much and Rohan vows to reunite the family and bring love back into their lives.
