Glasgowegians, Artwork, and Spiderman!
What does it mean, when seven twenty-somethings can pile into a hired taxi, listen to the "radio" for about ten seconds and all simultaneously exclaim, "Spiderman!" ? It means, my friend, that 1. We've seen the movie too many times and 2. That is the movie the taxi driver has throughtfully turned on for our adventures into Glasgow. This is the same taxi driver that drove us out to Dr Collins' house, and he was just as chatty with Phil and Brenda as he was with me, I'm happy to report.
Glasgow is a beautiful but industrial city...it was a nice comparison to Edinburgh. We visited three galleries. The first is at Glasgow University, and houses a work by Gavin Hamilton, who has become my Art Special while I'm here...so I got to defend my opinon of the work (that its not his best). Fun. They have part of the Mackintosh House (click here for tour) reconstructed there too...I always enjoyed his work but I never realized he did entire houses in his art style. Furniture, walls, fabric, everything. That's dedication. And a love of a theme. But beautiful. The other two are housed out in Pollock Gardens on the outskirts of the city. One is collected in the Pollock House (not our Residence Halls) which is a lovely, classical example of architecture. There is a great cafe in the basement and we had a wonderful lunch- I had a baked cheese with sweet onion relish...wonderful. The other gallery is just up the road, so we walked off our lunch (and admired the wooly Highland "Coos" (cows) playing with their calves!) and wandered this last gallery which is a fabulous and ecclectic collection of everything you can imagine. I do mean everything- tapestries, ancient greek urns, egyptian reliefs, Chinese statues, stained glass, paintings, sculptures, even entire archways. Pictures for the gallery are in the Glasgow folder, its called the Burrell Collectoin. Anyway, then it was time to head back and here I be.
