Politics is survivable, but just barely bearable.
You know, when my alarm went off this morning, I fully expected the piercing, shooting, stabbing pain of too many free vodka drinks to kick in full force. Much to my (pleasant) surprise, that never happened. Whoo hoo!
Yes, last night was the Night of the Party Bus. And I really did have a great time. We went to four different pubs- each of whom were really quite cool, even if the drinks were less than fabulous. First stop: Three Sisters. This pub looks like an underground catacomb, and indeed it might be. Boasting stone vault ceilings, panelled walls with gothic type booths, and privacy doors on many of them, the atmosphere is very dark ages. The free drink - Vodka Shaker- sucked big time. Like drinking a liquid jolly rancher. Not good. Next Stop- Belugas (like the whale). Very classy, very chic, very intimate, very pricey. But I loved it. All done up in suede and black leather, the bar was darkly lit by candles on each table and fabulous club chairs. It reminded me of the library on The Norway, and I felt right at home. But everyone else felt underdressed and outpriced, so we moved on quickly. Stop Three: Waikiki Beach. Hmm...always a good sign- oceaned themed bars. Complete with wooden dance floor, karaoke stage, and "beaches" with lounge chairs shaped like Shells, the bar tried hard to be a fun step into tropical paradise. The ceiling mimicked the ocean as seen from the ocean floor, luckily there were no giant fish. The music was good, and the free drink (Red Square) was...well, it was a fancy Mike's Lemonade. BUT we did have the best drink of the night there in a reasonably priced pitcher- a mix of malibu, vodka (see a pattern?) orange, banana, pineapple, and mango juice. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Finally, Frankensteins, which is actually internationally recognized. The interior looks like a gothic castle, and though the drinks are not cheap, they're comparable to other stops along the Royal Mile. The bar is four levels, one a soaring baclony overlooking the main dance floor, followed by two subterannian half floors below. By far the best "pub" atmosphere of the night (closely followed by Three Sisters) and definately the best music, with a live band playing a great mix of covers and traditionals intermixed with a decent DJ. Good food, good prices, and a rewards card. yay! To end the night, we were driven to a club, which was less than impressive, so we took a cab home shortly thereafter. But thats alright, because I was tired, my smile hurt, and it was down to Americans and no one else. I can party with Americans anywhere. Still, it was a great night.
Today, well...it should have, by rights, been a long day. But it went quicky. I made it through politics relatively well...I feel bad, though, there are only three of us in the class and even Lindsey gets bored, despite her protestations. She's resorted to writing down his every word to stay awake. I just draw and take notes when he says stuff not on the sheet he hands out. Which isn't often.
Sorry, no profound musings today, but don't you just love the professional style reviews of the pubs? Just fabulous ;) Ok I can't even say that with a straight face. I hope you enjoy the pictures, they're posted in the Edinburgh-January folder on my photos site. Cheers! |
