The War Memorial in Newton Abbot, known as the 'Spirit of Freedom' was erected in 1922, with a backdrop containing the names of WW2 deaths being added later. The site selected for the Memorial had an oak tree which had to be felled, as seen in the following two photographs.

Apparently, the tree was cut into blocks, and many houses in Newton Abbot still have them as their doorsteps today.
