Joe Batts Arm Joe Batts Arm was named for a girl named Jozelle Batt. She was rich but nice. She gave poor people her money, She even gave them food to eat. Jozelle was a church going girl, always preaching to the people the word of God. Nobody wanted her to die. She never had any enemies. One day when Jozelle was cooking food for the poor people, the kitchen caught on fire. The fire fighters came and put out the fire. She was not hurt. Only the kitchen was burnt and she got it fixed the same day the accident happened. The poor people told her not to bother to make the food, but she did it anyway and gave it to them. Once she bought Chinese food for the people and they ate it. On another day, the house caught fire, but this time not from cooking. Someone with a cold heart set the fire. It was a man pretending to be her friend. And after all she had done for him! He was sent to jail for a lifetime. She used to tell the people that she would give her right arm for them. Thats why they decided to name the town Joe Batts Arm! Jozelle W. Room

If you've ever been to Newfoundland, you've probably heard the anthem Ode to Newfoundland. I was so inspired by our vacation there this year that I wrote my own. Mine is very loosely based on the original. The writing program at school also gives me the opportunity to write so I can share with the kids!
The Windswept Land A rock in the stream of ocean currents Clothes billowing like a sail in the breeze on Signal Hill Dancing to the incessant rhythm of moving air. The Frozen Land Cool in the summer nights Sideways snow falls on ancient peninsulas Bodhran beats drive the march of seasons. The Smiling Land Friendly faces, helping hands, everywhere you go Spending the day with good friends youve just met 200 year old songs rising again on George Street. The Unforgettable Land A constant presence in your soul The continual longing to return to a place that feels like home Music cleansing your being like water from a never-empty bucket. The Magical Land Foreign land, yet so familiar Feelings of belonging to a place Ive just laid eyes on Comforted by the dancing, weaving sounds of life on the Rock.

Joe Batt's Arm is the name of a real town in north central Newfoundland. Other interesting town names are Heart's Content, Seldom Come By, Happy Adventure, and Come By Chance. Jozelle wrote this as a challenge to make up a story about how a town got its name.
