  1. Course Description

    This is a 1-unit laboratory course designed to complement ES 10. The hands-on activities included in this course are intended to strengthen and enrich what has been learned in the lecture. The course includes field and laboratory experiments, a film critique, campus surveys, classroom exercises and an exposure trip.

  2. Course Objectives

The course aims to provide:

    1. knowledge and skill in terms of environmental data gathering and analysis;

    2. opportunities to develop critical thinking and teamwork in problem solving; and

    3. venues for the application of environmental concepts, principles and ethics.

    Requirements:      Individual output (papers, reports, etc.)          25%

    Grade Equivalents:

    A           92-100
    B+         87-91
    B           83-86
    C+         79-82
    C           72-78
    D           60-71

  3. Plant Project

    Each student will take care of a plant for the whole semester and keep a log of how the plant is being cared for. The plant project will be graded as follows:

    Log + plant performance           10%
    Reflection paper + analysis        10%
                                                     20%

  4. Class Policies

Attendance. Two records of tardiness will be equivalent to one absence. You are only allowed 3 cuts for ES 12; no distinction is made between excused and unexcused absences. Students who exceed the allowable number of cuts will get a grade of W.

Class Decorum. Turn beepers and cellphones off during class, otherwise they shall be confiscated. Your physical and mental presence in class is highly valued, as well as your opinions and ideas. The fruitfulness of the semester very much depends on your openness, discipline and creativity.

    Consultation Hours

Consultation hours will be every WF 1.30-2.30 p.m. at the ES Program Office, Manila Observatory. Please set an appointment before coming. Students are allowed to set appointments outside the consultation hours but at a time convenient to the teacher.
