GEOLOGY
The District as a unit forms one of the most important geological horizons of the country and has recevied constant attention from the geologists and industrialists owing to its rich mineral wealth.The rock types met within the district are: BasicDykes,Granite,Syenite,Foliated Granite Gneiss,Amphibolite,and older Metasedimentary &basic metamorphic Rocks.
CLIMATE
General Dryness with cool Nights.Appreciable drop in temperature from june following the onset monsoon season.The climate of this district is more pleasent than that of the adjoining eastern and southern districts.
RAINFALL
The Annual rainfall varying between 680 and 980 mm depending on the locality.
HUMIDITY
The District on the whole enjoys a dry climate.The driest months are from January to April,the average relative humidity in the afternoons being less than 40 percent.
CLOUDINESS
Skies are lightly clouded during the period of january to about the middle of April
WINDS
From October to March winds blow mainly from Northeasterly to Easterly directions.In April winds from direction between south and west are common.
Because of the interior loaction the district is not directly affected by cyclonic storms and deprecious in the Bay of Bengal.
There are many crops cultivated here in Salem
Paddy :Short Term -Kuruvai(4 months), Long term - Samba (5-8 months)
Cholam -Important varieties,Periya Manjal ,Sen Cholam, Thalaivirichan Cholam.
Cumbu(Cajra) -Dry crop ,It's Sown in July.
Ragi,Samai Varagu,Tenai -these crops are cultivated on poor soils which would otherwise be left waste .
Wheat - cultivated as drycrop on the shervaroys and kollihills
Pulses - Horse gram ,Red gram ,Black gram.
Cotton -chief commercial crop
Tobacco - Tobacco is fairly large in attur.
Coffee -Coffee plantain was first begun on the shervaroys in 1820.cofee processing and curing is an important industry.large coffee estates in yercaud and in small patches in kolli hills.
other fruits and vegetables are cultivated here.

Yercaud -HillStation :
A Pleasent resort town at an altitude of 4330 feet on the
Shervaroyan mountains.Yercaud is Located at 35 Km from Salem
City.The name is derived from the picturesque yeri(lake) once
surrounded by a forest.The area is 627 hectares.
It's one of the Beautiful HillStation in Tamilnadu.
It has many Spots to visit:
* Ladies Seat & Gents Seat--->It gives a Beautiful view of
Salem City.
* AnnaPark --->Park maintained by Govt,which gives a splendour
look.
* Lake--->It's the main Attraction of the Visitors,It spreads
about 1 Km.It is called as Emerald lake.The overflow from the
lake becomes periya aru which creates the beautiful Killiyur
falls 5 km away.
Boat services are there to take a view around it.
* Pacoda Point--->There are three Pacodas ,built by Ancient
people.
*Archidarium& BotanicalGarden--->This Garden has varieties
of Archids & Wild Flowers.
It has different kinds of plants & trees.

Kollihills-HillStation :
Kolli hills is also a hill station located at 60 Km from city.
This hill is famous for Medicinal Plants of extremely high curing
capacity.
Mettur:
Stanely Reservoir gets Water from ThalaiKaveri which starts from
Karnataka nearby state.
It's 124 feet high & spreads to 33miles and covers an area of
60 square miles impounding 5,460,000 cubic feet of water..
There is a park adjacent to the dam,which adds beauty to the dam.
The Mettur Stanely Reservoir is the one which supplies Water for
Agriculture to Thanjavore,Salem,Trichi Districts.Salem gets the
Drinking Water from mettur Reservoir .
The Water in the Dam is used to generate Hydropower.
It's boon to tamilnadu providing lots of energy & the
essential water.
