Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw is another one of the countless "feel-good"
movies in the local movie industry. As what I have read from a movie review
in Pinoycentral.com, the movie is inspired by the Hollywood flick, Notting
Hill. Indeed, the movie is inspired by the said Hollywood flick. The plot
is very unoriginal. The main characters of this movie are Guillermo Talumpati
(Robin Padilla), and Francine Velasquez (Regine Velasquez).
Guillermo Talumpati, Guimo as called by family and friends, is a mechanic.
He won a dream date with Francine. Unfortunately, he was not able to have
a date with Francine due to the interference of the media people. Guimo
felt cheated, so he took Francine on a date by his plan. This only shows
that Guimo strives hard especially if he know that he really deserve it.
After their date, both became close friends and then they fell for each
other. Obviously, it is being implied here that the social status of two
persons does not matter. What matters is that, they both love each other.
From that, I could say that Guimo and Francine have a positive outlook
in life. They simply do not care what the people around them will say.
Their relationship is quite complex since both of them are from different
levels of society. Guimo was not able to adjust easily while Francine
could. On one situation, his sister was brought to the hospital due to
heart complications. Thus, operation must be done as soon as possible
and so as the money. Guimo did everything he could to get the amount needed.
As he returned to the hospital, he found out that Francine paid for the
operation. He confronted his father on why he asked for Francine's help.
This situation shows that Guimo is full of pride. His pride prevailed
in order to prove to Francine that he is capable of giving her things
without financial assistance. His father (portrayed by Ray Ventura) said
to Guimo that he sees his help to his sister as more of a load than that
of love. I think that his father is right, if he really wanted to help,
Guimo should not have let himself eaten by his own pride.
Francine's character, for me, is inspired by the song "Lucky"
(performed by Britney Spears). Francine is a typical recording artist.
Her schedules are very hectic, always crowded by fans and press and media
people. Francine felt that although she can have all the extravagant things
in life, she felt that there is something missing in her. In her date
with Guimo, he asked if she's happy. Instead of answering that question
with words, her eyes revealed that she is indeed sad. Then Guimo, asked
her a follow-up question, what would make her happy. Instantly, she said
that all that she wanted was a day free from the straining work, the interviews
of media and press people. Guimo reacted by apologizing to her that shows
that he wants Francine to be happy even for that short span of time. In
the situation wherein she fell for Guimo, this definitely shows that she
is not all like the other rich people who only go for the people of same
social status.
