COMMON or STRIPED  TIGER

Scientific name: Danaus genutia Cramer

  Field Characteristics:

  Wing Span: 72 to 100  mm.

T Wings are tawny with broad black veins. Margins of the wings are black with two white spots. Under side is similar but paler. Males have black and white spot on underside of hind wings.

  Distribution and Habitat:

  Common in scrub jungles and around human habitations as well as deciduous forests.

  Activity: It is more active in monsoons and post monsoons.

  Habits:

This butterfly is unpalatable due to presence of alkaloids, which it consumes as a caterpillar.  It is a strong flier but does not fly fast. Wing beats are regular and rapid

  Food :

Feeds on flower nectar of lantana, cosmos and other plants.
