COMMON INDIAN CROW

Scientific name: Euploea core

  Field Characteristics:

  Wing Span: 85 to 95mm

Glossy brown butterfly paler on underside. Rich chocolate brown on upper side. Two series of white spots run on the outer margins of all the wings. Body is black with prominent white spots.

  Distribution and Habitat:

  This species thrives in all the habitats. It is not common in very dry areas and thick evergreen forests.

  Activity: Active throughout the year.

Habits:

Flight is not swift or strong. It has a distinct sailing flight. Flight and height are maintained by few wing beats.

  Food:

It is a nectar-lover, frequents flowers of lantana, gliricidia , terminalia. It is an avid mud-puddler and comes to wet sand during hot hours of the day.

  Host Plants: Banyan, peepal, umber, Indian rubber and others.

  Mimicry:  Female of great egg-fly
