Playoff PitchersWhen we draw up an SL playoff staff in our minds, what does it consist of? This was of special interest to me in 2003 when I was about to trade Bartolo Colon for Tom Glavine, which would have given me 3 lefties in my starting rotation. How often do teams loaded on one side make the playoffs? Does a staff need a ton of Zs? Or Gs and Hs? What is the average move to first for a playoff team? If I took a snapshot of a starting staff's peripherals, what would they look like? I looked at all of our playoff teams, and here are the team totals:

2 to 1 righty to lefty ratio, almost 2 to 1 Z to no control rating ... is this a good representation of every staff in our league? What I mean is, if I looked at the average staff for every team in the league over our recorded history, will I find about 1.63 lefties per staff? Will I find 1 out of 4 staffs having an H? And about 2 pitchers per staff having a +2 or higher? Maybe. Or, are these totals more reflective of who has been in the playoffs the most in our recent history ... all but 6 of the teams listed were from SL founders Greg, Chris, Ken and myself, and maybe we draft slightly different than others. I don't know. I do know that my making the playoffs with a majority of lefties on my staff was a rarity, as it was done for just the 3rd time ... but I don't know if it was a rarity to make the playoffs for a majority lefty staff, i.e., maybe this was just the 3rd time a team fielded a majority of lefties on it's starting staff, and thus it's so far a certainty that if you start a majority of lefties that you'll make the playoffs. Again, I really don't know. I later did a breakdown of the total grades. When I did it, I failed to go back and attribute the grades to individual teams, but hopefully it adds to the discussion. 1 22 1 21 1 20 1 19 2 18s 3 17s 7 16s 6 15s 16 14s 25 13s 19 12s 26 11s 16 10s 11 9s 10 8s 7 7s 8 6s Or an average of 11.69 per pitcher. There have been more 6s, 7s and 8s than 15s and above. Of course, the same question I asked above should apply here ... if I have a 15 or above, do I usually make the playoffs or not? Hard to say, but in seeing that 3 20s or better made the playoffs, and not being able to think of 3 others that did not make the playoffs, I'd assume it's a great bet that if you have a 20 that you will make the playoffs. Again, I'm not trying to answer the questions as much as I want to see a snapshot of the playoff staff. I went ahead with the Colon-Glavine deal because I believed having the 3rd lefty wasn't going to hurt my chances.
