Plate Appearances by Platoon RatingsIn scouting 2003 before the draft, it seemed to me that there were a great deal more lefties with SA ratings. Thus, I put high stock in lefties like Rueter and Mulder. In any event, here is the breakdown of SL plate appearances for each platoon rating (with switch hitters, R SA-Os and L SA-0s put together):
2001 2001% 2002 2002% 2003 2003%
- 0 23815 41.6% 22535 39.7% 22246 40.00%
L 1 307 0.5% 2606 4.6% 1533 2.8%
L 2 2226 3.9% 1726 3.0% 3728 6.7%
L 3 2565 4.5% 695 1.2% 4176 7.5%
L 4 656 1.1% 2089 3.7% 826 1.5%
L 5 8030 14.0% 9676 17.1% 7118 12.8%
R 1 6115 10.7% 7180 12.7% 6160 11.1%
R 2 6244 10.9% 3854 6.8% 4024 7.2%
R 3 5758 10.1% 4449 7.8% 4130 7.4%
R 4 831 1.5% 1661 2.9% 1617 2.9%
R 5 729 1.3% 263 0.5% -- 0.0%
In reality, 2003 plate appearances were pretty similar to 2002, except not as many of the lefty platooned at bats went to platoon 5s. Pre-draft, 2004 seems to be a year in the other direction, with more righty platoon ratings will get plate appearances. Will that mean righty pitchers will have a greater value in the coming season, and in the coming draft? | << Back | Main 2003 Notes Page | |
