CL PointsI remember Ken getting alot of guff for taking soon-to-be over-the-hill starting pitchers like Clemens, Randy Johnson, Glavine, David Wells, and Greg Maddux in the CL draft. Of course, his huffy response at the time was not that they would succeed for years to come, but that the CL would only last a short time, and he cared only about winning immediately. He turned out to be right about the latter, and he surely would have been right if he had said the former. When I think about the CL now, it's usually in regard to how special Ken's aged staffs were in succeeding SLs. Along those same lines, if I'm thinking about the CL, I'm thinking about the other players and how they would have done had we kept the league afloat. Ironically, the best way I can measure CL success is by pointing to each player's SL totals. In preparing the Draft Notes, I wanted to come up with a measure to gauge which CL players and which CL teams would have had the most success over these lost years, and I did so by way of accumulating some of their SL totals. I gathered these CL ratings and arranged them by the teams at CL draft-time. This doesn't reward the teams that had great FA moves, and it may be slightly biased toward Greg, as the draft lists all 34 of his players for both of his teams, but the other 6 teams only had 33 players listed on the original draft document. Granted, my system is rudimentary, as SL performance is either not a factor in some of the totals or a huge factor in the totals ... but it is what it is. Obviously, Barry Bonds would have been a huge player in this or any other league over the last few seasons, but he alone would not have been able to overcome Griffey and Sheff and Chipper and ARod and Robby and Pedro. And Mo Vaughn was a terrible pick, and Henry Rodriguez went a little early, considering he never made an SL roster (11th round). My apologies for not remembering which team was the Kansas City Faggos, which was the Eerie Knights, which was the Montana Muff Divers, or for remembering the name of Chris's 2nd team. | << Back | Main 2003 Notes Page | |
