WM 2009 Topics

  1. If a playoff injury would otherwise cause a free agent position player to be needed, rostered J-3s would not be required to sit a 3rd game after playing two straight games. The rostered J-3 would otherwise retain the same game limits.
  1. regarding how the free-for-all finished where each division set their own ending point, there should a rule that it be defined ahead of time at what point the free-for-all ends for everyone: i.e., Free-For-All ends at Game X.
  1. draft order should not be left to chance or dumb luck but by inverse order of how we finished
  1. Dropping the rule for two teams that tie for a division and wild card to play a one game playoff, as occured with Ken and Keith this season.
  1. Run whatever stat thingie that Greg did to get the MLB stats for GIDP, SF, and IBB on the disk as in 2008.
  1. Again it happened that a manager overused position players in SL 2008, meaning he was faced with not having enough player games available for the necessary games. In the past, we made provisions, due to circumstances beyond the managers control, such as injury or ejections at the end of the season, to allow a FA pickup to join the roster. But when it happens more because of what would more be called carelessness (making in-game player removals at or near the end of the season that force the manager to short himself later on), what do we do? Is that manager "rewarded" by picking up a decent replacement level free agent? Or should they be forced to have the manager at the end of the season pick a starting pitcher to play that position (probably not the pitcher slated to start that game)? Or something else?

editor's note - Some discussion surrounded leaving it to the managers at the end to decide. Below is Jim's RESPONSE.
If a manager chooses during the draft to "load up" on J3 and J4 position players because they have large offensive up side for a small number of games, then that team/manager should be STUCK at the end of the season when all those players are walking around in casts and he cant field a team. thanks for the forum.
  1. Seed the playoffs based on records. The wild card would no longer automatically get the worst seed, allowing the #1 seed to be "protected."

In 2008 as in season's past, Prez Cup winner Chris would have had the team with the worst record in the 1st round, Greg, instead of getting WC Ken.
  1. Amend the current PLAYOFF stolen base allowance rule from

    G - 2 attempts per series

    To:

G - 1 attempt per game, max 2 attempts per series
  1. A)
Proposed rule for relief usage for Starting Pitchers replaced in a playoff rotation by another eligible Starting Pitcher

    • Combined starting and relief innings pitched for replaced starter cannot exceed playoff Relief Innings 8% rule (such as, if 150 IP in MLB, in playoffs cannot exceed 12 IP)
    • Replaced starter must have required starting pitcher rest before available in relief (such as pitcher that started game 2, subsequently replaced in rotation, first becomes available in relief in game 6)
    • J-0 & J-1 available for max 2 games in relief, J-2 & J-3 available for max 1 game in relief, w/ J-4 only available for game 7 (if game 7 usage complies w/ required rest)

    B) editor's note - Greg responded to this, asking that this perhaps be simplified to "player must rest 3 days before and after a playoff start"
And should a rotation injury happen during a playoff series, causing a starter who had not been in the playoff rotation and had already been used as a reliever in series, that replacement starter must rest in the games following the injury so that there is the required rest that would allow them to start (such as pitcher that started game 2 is hurt in game 2, the replacement starter cannot relieve in games 3, 4, and 5 to be eligible to start game 6).
  1. editor's note - 6th starter Mike Grace started Game 162, not Game 163, as noted in the "background" below
We implemented the practice of drafting 6th starters in 1997 because in previous years, it was a free agent free for all when there was a rotation injury. We soon realized that not only would 6th starters drafted onto our teams eliminate this practice, but we also realized that giving them any "status" whatsoever on the roster was not our intention, and this group could not pinch-run or pinch-hit or anything except start in games after a rotation injury occured. However, there seems to be a competitive loophole that has been left open. In 2000, a 6th starter started in the semifinals due to multiple rotation injuries. In 1997, a 6th starter started in game 163 due to injury.

    A)
Can we amend our rules to force rotation-eligible pitchers to start in games 163 and in the playoffs, if an injury or multiple injuries occur within a rotation? That is to say, pitchers with 21 MLB starts or greater are the only pitchers who can start following game 162. If a team's 6th is "rotation eligible," that pitcher would qualify, but otherwise a GM would need to dip into the FA pool to claim a rotation eligible starter as their replacement starter.

    B) editor's note - Greg and I discussed this some, and he was generally not in favor of it. I am adding the B) rule proposal below as it is an intriguing question he asks about the 3A) rule proposal
i somewhat feel, if we don't allow non-rotation eligible 6th starters in the playoffs, why do we in the regular season? why not make all starts be made by rotation-eligible guys?
  1. Discuss penalties / double jeopardy / Maggs stealing 3 extra times in 2001, not dealing with it those games, so not stealing in the semifinals vs. Luke Scott pinch running by mistake and dealing with it that game.
  1. Allow LM's Bunt for a Hit feature to be turned on.
