August 5, 2007 Challenger Point & Kit Carson Summits
My friend Ryan Adams drove down Friday night from Denver. Saturday we hiked up to Willow Lake and set up a camp just above the lake and treeline. Sunday the 5th, we awoke at 0445, ascended and crossed the ridge Ryan's standing on, and summitted Challenger Point (right behind him) at 0745. By 0845, we had summitted Kit Carson Peak (also in the photo- behind Ryan to the left). The route to Kit Carson involves descending from Challenger Point to the diagonal ledge that leads across Kit Carson's west face. Unfortunately the pic can't begin to show the immense scale or exposure of the peaks, route, or the face below the diagonal ledge. It was an OUTSTANDING climb of two amazing Sangre de Cristo peaks. Thanks Ryan for partnering on another 14er. I think that's a total of 9 we've hit together now!
