Dutch is a 4 year old German Shepherd Dog that I took in while Ulan was still with us. At the time I had no intentions of making him a working dog, and the poor guy was just kind of hangong out here while I tried to find him a good home. Thank god for small miricles, I couldnt find a home I deemed suitable for such a loal Majestic animal. When Ulan Passed away I spent a lot of time with Dutch, Talking to him and making my self feel better thru that. I know he probably thought I was crazy, but he unknowingly helped me thru a very bad time in my life. I was not at all sure that I wanted to continue to be a Dog handler. But after a lot of soul searching I decided that if Dutch could do the job, since I alreaddy had him I would do it. It turns out that he is well suited for law enforcement, which is amazing since it is so hard to find a dog with all the right stuff. The only problem I had with him is that I couldnt get him interested in playing with toys, which is no small problem when working in detection, His obedience is good and he likes to bite the bad guy, tracking and building search are very satisfactory as well.. I put the word out that iI would be looking to aquire a hi drive female for the detection work.. My thinking being it would be a lot easier to handle male and a female at the same time, Last thing I need is 2 alpha males at the house again..been there donr that..perfer not to again....Enter Greta...
Gretta is a 2 year old solid black German Shepherd Dog, she is the firs dog I actually went to look at after deciding to get a second dog, I was quite franky stunned that I found a dog with the right temperment and prey drive right off the bat, I took my trainig aids with me to Fables German Shepherd Rescue in Kentucky and had already, before I got there figured I would come home empty handed, After about 5 mins of playing retrieve with her I was blown away, I loaded her Up and assured Penny that Gretta was going to be well take care of. The rst is history. She is a fantastic detector dog.
Dutch, after watching me work narcotics detection trainig with Gretta, out of the blue developped an incredible drive,"all of the sudden"jelousy maybe", and now he is profecient in narcotics detection as well.
Both Dogs are Certified to Drug-Beat Standards in Narcotics Detection, And dutch in Patrol as well. |
