The Bengal Tiger is in the Mammal group of the Panthera Tigris tigris. The grace and power of the Bengal Tiger evokes fear and awe in man. It has the ability to kill animals double it's own size and is one of nature's more feared predators. The sizes in males are 9-10 feet, head to tip of tail. The shoulder height is normally 36 inches and the males can weigh 400-570 pounds. His characteristic reddish gold fur with black stripes are easily visible to visitors in a zoo. But within the tiger's natural habitat of the forest and reed beds, the markings act as a camouflage and enable this large creature to disappear from view. His roar can be heard up to 2 miles away, and they contrary to opinion, do often purr. They only pur when breathing outwards, unlike domestic cats who purr inwards. The cousin of the Bengal tiger is the Siberian Tiger, and is the world's largest cat. |
