Dora and I attended our second agility class last night. She was ready to go helped along by the buffet of treat options. A little of that Natural Balance stuff that comes in a roll, string cheese, hotdogs and fake chicken strips. I made up a huge ziploc baggy of the stuff and just pull it out of the fridge for training. Before class starts there are various pieces to work on as warm ups, the ladder, a moving plank and jumps. Last week Dora was not enamored of the moving plank, but last night walked right on it and stood there for her treat reward. The ladder isn't a problem, she knows where her rear end is. I think she's just an above average coordinated dog.
We reviewed the down side of the a-frame, no problems there. She "tables" just like an old veteran and is doing the 2 on 2 off feet on the down contact with ease. Same with the teeter totter, I was concerned when she acted like it was going to bite her last week, but this week it was up on it with all four feet, walked to the end and down off the table after giving me a nice 2 on 2 off. Weave poles were next and again she picked up that after a couple of tries. Of course in beginning weave poles it's set up like a "tunnel" of poles and then you move them in closer and closer. I love this method, it's so much better than the first methods I was taught with my first dog ages ago.
Tunnels were next and that proved to be the highlight of the evening. After a couple of runs through the long open tunnel without a problem, Dora missed the entry on the last go round. Instead of popping around the tunnel she jumped on top of the tunnel and ran the entire 20 foot length on the TOP! She's so coordinated and light on her feet that the tunnel barely twitched. The instructors and I were totally amazed--none of us has ever seen that before. We've all seen dogs jump up on top of a tunnel and back off again, or jump over a tunnel, but never had any of us seen one traverse the entire length on the top of the tunnel! Dora looked very pleased with herself as usual.
I do believe I have an agility dog once again...
