On my Mother's side (God rest her soul) I have Comanche kola's. This page is dedicated to them for their never ending thirst for knowledge in their cutlure. ---------------------------------------

When the Spanish explorers brought the horse out of Mexico in the early 1500's, they dramatically changed the lives of the Plains Indians who roamed the far reaching lands West of the Mississippi rivers. --------------------------------------------- While the horsemanship of the Plains Indians astonished the first white men who observed them, it was the Comanche -relatively newcomers to the Plains, who proved to be unsurpassed as the real horsemen. ------------------------------------------------ Until the early 1700's, the Comanches had lived in the forested mountains of Wyoming. They later moved South, where they began raiding the horse herds of the Spanish. ------------------------------------------------ The Comanche were often known as "The Red Knights" of the Plains ---------------------------------------------- The weapons of the Comanche were ideally suited for combat on horseback. He carried a short bow no more than about three feet long, but yet so powerful that it could send an arrow completely through the body of a buffalo. |

The Comanche also carried a war lance, and since his courage was measured by the shortness of his lance, this weapon rarely exceeded seven feet in length. ---------------------------------------------------- Fully armed and mounted, the Comanche proved a measurable terror for the Spanish, Mexicans and Americans who settled in Texas, and became a worthy foe of the best troops the U.S. Army could send against them. |
