Let's hear from Tennessean music writer Tom Roland:
Heard at the Bluebird and stopped by the cops. It's not often that someone has both those experiences the same evening, but Chris Isaak can make that claim.
Isaak, who plays the Ryman Auditorium Tuesday, still remembers playing the Bluebird in the 1980s, when Barbara Orbison, widow of Roy Orbison, offered him a ride. It became a uniquely Nashville experience.
"She was drivin' a convertible, and I was in my stage clothes," Isaak recalled. "And the police stopped us, and the guy said, in his heavy Southern accent, 'Where y'all from?'
"And she looked and she said, 'We're from Los Angeles,' with a heavy German accent.
"Then he looked over at me and put his flashlight on me, and I was wearin' this gold and blue and purple woven, glowing suit, and he looks over and said, 'Are you all married?'
"I swear that's the God's truth. I don't know what that means. He just couldn't figure us out."
They didn't get a ticket, and with good reason.
"I think we freaked him out more than he freaked us out."
