"I watched all of those beach movies," says Chris Isaak. "And I always wanted to go surfing." The northern Californian finally took it up three years ago when he moved from Stockton to San Francisco. "I got a used surfboard and a wet suit, and I bought a book called Handbook of Surfing at a junk store," he says. Following the book's advice, Isaak spent hours practicing--in his room. "You set the board on the bed and do a push-up type thing," he explains. When he tried it in the water, he was hooked. What's the hardest thing about surfing? "Getting that damned suit on." And the best thing? "It's good to be alone."
