Background

Plagiarism is one of the growing problems in most of the university. Nowadays, it’s not easy to define plagiarism in most of the work (e.g. Projects, assignments, essays and homework etc…) that are done by the students as there are big amount of assignments available on the online resources, tutors and lecturers will have difficulty spotting plagiarism occur in the assignments. Although they are able to search by the keywords from the assignments through the internet search engine, the arguments between the students and the lecturers might have different point of view in a word of plagiarism. The reason is simply, because of the degree of having the same meaning in the assignments is hard to define as plagiarism. Based on the meaning of the online dictionary said, plagiarism means:

  • The unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.
  • Something used and represented in this manner.

In most of the case, copying is not defined as plagiarism. However, plagiarism in copied materials is defined as how many percentages of materials that copied from the original source and did the original editor name (e.g. Author's name and book titles etc…) been mention on the copied materials.

As a result, there are no exact numbers in the degree of plagiarism and the world to fight plagiarism will never end.

JPlagTool is a software programme built to counter today's plagiarism problem which is an ongoing problem in schools, instititues and unversities. With advanced features, JPlagtool detects even the smartest Plagiarized work and accurately list the percentage of plagiarism between identical works.

Features of JPlagTool

Local Search: Performs plagiarism test on a set of files stored on a local disk

The following two options are currently available:

SentenceComparison looks for similar sentences (based on percentage of shared words) between the two documents. The margin determines what percentage of a similar work is considered a cheat.

SubstringComparison looks for identical substrings shared between two documents. This algorithm compares doc1 and doc2 by looking at every substring s1 of length "margin" in doc1, and seeing if s1 exists in doc2.

Web Crawler: Launches a WebCrawler starting from a "root" html page online. The Crawler will download files linked from this page based on rules specified in the Configurations panel. After the files are downloaded, they are compared to each other locally.

It is a utility built into JPagTool for automatic downloading of relevant documents for comparison. The crawler can follow different search algorithms depending on different needs. The following two options are currently available:

WebSearch: This algorithm forces the crawler to follow each and every link on the page exhaustively looking for documents. Options such as a "timeout" and "max number of files" can be set from the Configurations panel.

DomainWebSearch: This algorithm is similar to the WebSearch above, except the crawler does not search sites that are outside the "root's" domain name.
