In 1954 I purchased an amplifier for my electric guitar. This poorly designed device had a habit of destroying the 6L6 output amplifiers. After replacing these tubes several times, the local ham radio operator (Verdie - K7LYB) decided to show me how to make the necessary repairs myself. This was my initial introduction into electronics, and became the basis for my life-long interest in Ham Radio, and for a career in Electrical Engineering. I attended several engineering colleges during the period of 1960 to 1986......and have never stopped learning. Military service (1963-1968) provided experience in long-range search radar and in avionics. This was my introduction to the then very new field of solid-state electronics. Employment with AT&T eventually led to an assignment at Bell Laboratories and in-depth involvement in computer design and in programming languages. |
With the breakup of
the Bell System in 1984 I began working as a contract engineer and
engineering manager for a series of 3 to 5 year network design &
implimentation projects. Somewhere during all this I also worked as Network Engineer and Country Manager for an Egyptian company in Saudi Arabia. After 3 years as Quality Control Manager and Help Desk Manager for a software development firm (we wrote and ported OEM TCP-Stacks), I finished my career with 6 years as a Lead Engineer at Sprint's Advanced Technology Laboratory. During the time at SprintLabs I also co-founded, then sold an electronics design & development company (Global NavComm Technology, Inc.) that specialized in GPS & Web-based vehicle tracking and asset security. Retirement is boring, so I am still looking for yet another Engineering Management position... |
