I've been doing music for a long time -- I started cello in the third or fourth grade, when my good friend, Gayle McFadden decided she wanted to play cello.  She quit after a few months, but I was hooked.  Ever since, I've been playing -- in orchestras, in quartets, solo...

Craig plays timpani, so we're able to do many of these gigs together. Currently we play in the
Columbia Symphony of Portland, Oregon, the Yaquina Orchestra in Newport, Oregon, and the Linfield Chamber Orchestra of McMinnville, Oregon.  I also play in Sinfonia Concertante Orchestra in Portland, and the Chehalem String Quartet.

Combining sailing and music is a particular challenge.  When we were "boat shopping" we searched for (and found) a boat with enough space to sit and play cello.  Then, there's the problem of humidity changes which can turn an old acoustic cello into a bundle of matchsticks (not to mention the effect of slamming through heavy weather).  I bought a Jensen Electric Cello to meet the challenge.  Eric Jensen manufactured the electric cello so that the neck and fingerboard matches my old acoustic cello.  I can learn new repertoire while underway.  Now the only challenge is to take advantage of some of the available electronic effects -- Purple Haze, anyone?
