K2 began all the way back in early 2001. The 'Hair Brothers', Daniel Schmidt and Adam Perotti had both realised that they were hairy. I remember hearing one day, just before class 1007 stepped into geography, 'Oi hairbrother, do you play an instrument?' right then and there Adam Perotti said the phrase that started this phenomenon. 'Yeah, I play guitar' I (Daniel) said, 'Serious?? I play the bass' said Adam. We had barely talked to eachother before, but that weekend Adam invited me over to his house for a jam. At this stage it was only a guitar, bass and offspring cover songs, but we were originally 'The Red Hot Hairy Brothers' (funny as shit or what?). Practice and practice went by and eventually picked up a guy as buffed as hell called Chris Malone to play the drums, but still we were only playing 'Bob' by NOFX over and over again, we had also found us a scoundrel of a guitarist called Singouro David Mavromatis, a metal-head with a bad attitude and a sore wrist. For a while we were called 'The Four Skins', cos there was four of us and we thought it was funny. But David left the band to pursue a heavy metal solo career that never took off (mainly cos it was just a bunch of 'Twisted Sister' and 'Slayer covers'), and he dragged Malone down with him. So now we were back to basics, Adam and Daniel, 'The Red Hot Hairy Brothers', things were slow for a while, but late one night in 2002, Daniel penned a song by the name of 'Apathy', he thought it was shit (and he still does) but he kept it on a piece of paper and showed it to Adam the next time he came around with his bass. I think Adam saw something in it (perhaps the chance for a bass solo) and later that day we recorded 'Apathy', it was only the 'Red Hot Hairy Brothers' and a tacky drum-machine, but we loved it. We knew that we had to find a drummer...quickly, before our "talent" escaped us. By chance we found an afroed creature with a drumkit he got for a bargain in his room. Kris Rodda, big hair, big dreams and a big willy. Adam and I decided he needed to be put to the test, could he handle the 'Red Hot Hairy Brothers'?, so it was time for a jam that would make or break K2 (we picked up the name somewhere along the line). Daniel had sent Kris a demo eariler that week of a song he wrote called 'Just Desserts' and said to him 'Do something with it or we're finding someone who can.' But what he did blew the Red Hot Hairy Brothers away, it was now officially punk rock. In the first 6 minutes of two-thirds of the new 'K2' practicing at Adam's house while he was at work, Daniel and Kris wrote a little number called 'Drumming Holiday' which started as a joke but is now the opening song for K2. Our first practice with all 3 of us alone was extremely productive, both sexually and musically (Although 'drumming holiday' lasted longer than the sex ;). i dont think anyone will get that joke). Anyway, the first practice helped us perfect the 3 or 4 already written songs, and make way for new songs such as 'Just us 2'(which is a ripper) 'Pickslide' and everybodys favourite, 'My girlfriend thinks im Gay'. Our first real gig was at the Green Room on the 1/11/2002, Clovercrest Church, where the hardcore fans came out to see us. It was set up by Adam Frawley of rival/friend band RNM (www.rnmpunk.cjb.net) (nice plug fellas), which we much appreciate. And that is the story of K2 to the present date. Who knows what the future holds for K2, punk rock stars? sellout and be over-popular? finish after highschool? end up busking in rundle mall in order to buy or food and booze cos we live in the gutter with the guy inbetween Target and Verandha Music? Only time will tell. |
