When you teach in the state of Oregon, you quickly become well familliar with the Oregon State Standards. I believe them to be terrific guidelines for teaching content along grade levels, and would encourage anyone with elementary-age children to scan them for ideas of what "benchmarks" to look for in their student's learning. There are oodles and oodles of "standards" to be taught to in the following subject areas:

English Language Arts

English Language Proficiency

Mathematics

Science

Social Sciences

The Arts

Second Language

Physical Education

Health Education

Oregon Skill Sets

Career-Related Learning

Technology

Physical Education is defined as follows:

The study of physical education prepares students for the long-term benefits of an active and healthy life. A physically educated person performs a variety of physical activities, participates regularly in physical activity, and knows the benefits from involvement in physical activity and its contributions to a healthy life.

Today's classes at Southwest Charter School served as an introduction to the following Physical Education standard:

PE.03.FL.01 Identify changes in his/her body during moderate to vigorous exercise.

We had a great time checking for our pulse, and getting our hearts racing! Many good connections were made with the body, the heart, the blood, the oxygen, and the muscles!
