Exclusive feature reported by guest correspondent, Bob Maswick (seen here ripping up the roads of Lake Placid with Ed Lis).
The quest to measure ourselves against members of the US Ski Team drove
us to repeat their TT up the backside of Whiteface on Saturday. Cries of "Stop the car, I think I'm gonna be sick!" provided a counterpoint to the rumble of touring Harleys. On this picture perfect blue sky day, the PNMSP was found in Bloomingdale with a 9 mile warmup along the scenic River Road.
In an effort to carry out President Rose's edict for a stronger NYSSRA,
a special invite was made to Todd Carter, CWX team manager. The offering of an olive branch backfired - the mere thought of skiing with the vaunted PNMSP gripped Carter in a wave of terror, causing his Bluetooth headset to explode from his ear. Although he suffered 1st degree burns, Carter was not seriously injured. Motorola has said the device is beyond repair.
The Lord of Destruction, Deliverer of Pain and the Colossus of Chaos
squared off at the steel deck bridge. At 30 seconds to go, watches were
started and bodies readied. At zero, Maswick and Korzenecki exploded up the hill; on his V2 840's Lis rolled slowly and noisely behind. A barking & chasing dog further slowed him.
Joe K., with his multi-wheeled V2's surged ahead, while Maswick slowly
built up to cruise mode, keeping the gap manageable and The Colossus in sight. The racers were greeted with a surprise headwind thru the flats leading to the climb, but they battled through.
A short, quick and powerful V2 was what Kris Freeman used to win his
race and PNMSP followed suit as long as possible, switching to a V1 when the incline got steep. Maswick pulled Joe K. back in midway only to see Korzenecki's back for the rest of the race.
At a makeshift finish line, Maswick and Korzenecki were left shaking
their heads in disbelief at their sub 29 minute times - either they are now ranked in the top 15 of the US team OR the men's US Team skied a 2K longer course.
