Kiki Cares
I am a down to earth type of person... "What You See is What You Get" is my rule of thumb. If you don't like me ... WHY
National Caregivers Month

The month of November is designated as Natioingnal Caregivers month.  Care giving can be one of the most difficult yet rewarding job.   As a caregiver i do believe this statement.  I ecspecially hold this true when dealing with the elderly.  But to me what makes it rewarding is the fact that everyday you get to help others.

What to you makes Caregiving Rewarding?

I take care of my 78 yo dad. He has Lewy Body Dementia....do you know what that is? Anyway, it is much easier now, than when we first got him about 4 years ago. I cried so much at first having lost my dad, a genius in the field of engineering, to this disease even though he was physically still with us. After all these years, lots of doctors, and much tweaking of his meds, he is finally able to function somewhat normally. Okay, so I tell you all this to say, I and my family are so very blessed to have my dad with us. My husband and children know him and love him so very in a way that never would have happened if he had not come to live with us. Yes, he can be a handful but my children now have a love and a servant's heart for elderly people...all thanks to my dad. I could never have taught them this without him. I appreciate that life is short and we have no promise of tomorrow and we should make the most out of every moment. I pray that the Lord would sustain and give you His strength as you work to care for others, like me and my dad. Thank you!

I so admire doctors and nurses (well, a lot of them anyway!), and often wish I had pursued that direction myself... but when I was young enough I was one of those who just wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kindness of nurses when both my parents became ill and ultimately passed on from cancer. I'm sure it's sooo very difficult tho... yet it's a wonderful thing, to be able to give of yourself in this way! When we're sick or dying, we sure do need compassion and kindness of people like you... it makes all the difference!!

Thank you for all the wonderful comments. It is a very rewarding job but at the same time patience is all anyone who is in need of help, if you are not patient then that is when both you and the recipiant get frustrated. Communication is number one, even with your elderly Alzhimers and/or dimenta patient who is always forgeting, if you explain procedure and what you are doing... it may not be remember but it makes any sour situation more tolerable and easier to redirct there attent when they do get upset or forget what a salt shaker is and how to use it. the only hard part is when it is their time to go home. All through my CNA class, Medical assisting class, jobs, LVN program (which will be done soon), and I know i will hear it when i get into the RN program is don't get attached to the person get care, because when they pass away its harder. to me the field you are in you have to have some kind of compassion and you will start caring about someone, the elderly are the easiest to get close to but someone close or not dies its still hard. But during my experiences I am proud that there where times that I did get close to someone (mostly elderly) that when they did go, it was actually easier because through stories they had lived a good life and now they are no longer suffering and plus you had became a friend to someone in need and changed and made a difference in someones life... And that feeling you feel is what the reward is, and to think you were not expecting a reward! I love the field I am working in and continueing my education to finish with a AS in nursing is not for the reconization of being a hero or even the money, Its to give care to those who need it and to become a friend so they know that they are never alone.
