After 'Thaneer Thaneer,' this film brings tears to your eyes over the water problem.
The village is so dry that it has not seen even a drop of water to wet the ground or the throats of the thirsty. Without water to farm and irrigate the fields, the land becomes parched and cracks up. The people starve.
Under these circumstances, Prashant goes from village to village dancing and entertaining, so he can get food for his village people.
To solve the water problem, the people get together and decide to dig a well, so Prashant approaches Mahadevan for his help. Misfortune never comes single and when Mahadevan falls victim to the well he helps to dig, the hero falls into a depression.
Realising that it is futile to believe in the land anymore, Prashant takes his village people to Rajasthan. It is something like out of the frying pan and into the fire as the people are forced into bonded labor by the villain Vincent Asokan. How Prashant rescues his people from the villain's clutches forms the climax of the film.
Till now, Prashant has done only city oriented roles, but director Sivashanmugam has put him in a rural setting for the first time. When he does his crazy antics to bring home rice to his people and revels in their enjoyment, Prashant enters our hearts immediately. The villagers advance an inch in life only to fall back a yard, and Prashant's grief at their ill fate is superbly portrayed.
To see Pooja in typical village belle appearance with pavadai and plaited hair with colorful ribbons, one is quite surprised at her simple beauty. She's very good when she sells her wares at the market place, "vilakkumaaru vaanguga amma…"
Vincent Asokan as the villain yells a little too much. He must realize that this sort of villain belongs to his father Asokan's era and must try to rectify himself.
Namitha puts in an appearance as the kind hearted sister of the villain, but nothing more than that. Except for the tea stall comedy of Karunaas, other jokes border on silly.
It's a wonderful story but the director has not given a powerful thrust to the story, so the screenplay ends up as arid as the village soil.
'Thagappansamy' is fertile in parts but arid most of the time.
