| REBIRTH We wind our life about another life. We hold it closer, dearer than our own. Anon, it faints and fails in deathly strife, Leaving us stunned and stricken and lone. In the crimson evening when the ship rounded Jynja headed for home. Long gray miles slipped swiftly past in a swirl, Weary from fishing, her mind drifting within the seas frothy foam. When like a wild shriek from some frightened beast, out of her rose, The stout ship lay hard and fast, caught, without hope, upon a hidden rock. The deep sea rolled around in dark repose, Her timbers thrilled as nerves, when through them passed the spirit of that shock. So calm the air, so calm and still the flood. That low down in its blue translucent glass She saw the great fierce sea serpents that thirst for her blood, Pass slowly, then repass. Amidst oath, and prayer, and rush, and wreck, Faint questions waiting with no reply, Silence fell as the waters rushed upon the broken splintered deck, And on this night she fights sleep in the depths of the darkest blue sky. As if the listening winds did recieve this song, One star streaked across the heaven when early morning hues broke the mist. For a storm did stir into its angered rage moments before the dawn, Now one figure lays on foreign soil, sent back without wings as if she were unblessed. We cannot say goodbye, We do not die with those we mourn, For with our cup full, we toast to future, happiness and life! Out of this new sparks are born! |
