Course Description : This course is designed to provide students with a continuing opportunity to develop their fluency and accuracy in English through their interactions with a variety of themes that are up-to-date, sophisticated, and varied in tone of ideas and issues of wide concern. As they become actively engaged in discussing or writing about the topics presented in reading passages, students will be able to develop their ability to think critically, to express their own opinions more freely in correct English, and to organize their own opinions so that they can be clearly expressed either in oral presentations or written compositions.

Textbooks : Select Readings: Intermediate by Linda Lee and Erik Gundersen, Oxford University Press, 2001.

Methodology : English is best learned in an environment where the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are integrated around a common focus. Students will be expected to do the reading assignments and the related exercises outside of class. In class listening and speaking activities will provide students with the opportunity to use the vocabulary and grammatical structures they have learned through the readings and exercises and to become aware of the customs and values of other cultures. Students will also learn how to develop and organize their ideas in paragraphs and essays. In order to create an environment where English is the medium of communication, students will be expected to use only English in the class.

Course Requirements : Students are expected to attend all classes, to actively participate in the classroom activities, and to submit regular written homework assignments. Although the university allows up to six absences, being absent or late will affect their development of English language skills and will most likely result in a lowered grade. Students are responsible for any work missed when they are absent. Also, tests and quizzes cannot be made up.

Evaluation : Grades are based on :

40% Written tests or Quizzes
30% Two oral tests (Mid-term & Final) and Group project
20% Writing assignments
10% Class participation and attendance
Class Schedule : Please look at the "class schedule" page in our class website .
