Course Description : This course is designed to provide the opportunity to develop the four skills of English: listening, speaking, reading and writing at an intermediate level, while giving systematic attention to grammar and vocabulary. In this course students will develop both fluency and accuracy in English through interaction with a wide variety of topics of interest to young adults, that present many opportunities for personalization and discussion, and writing, promoting the development of both linguistic and communication skills.

Textbooks : Passages 1 by Jack C. Richards & Chuck Sandy, Cambridge University Press

Unit 4AUnit 4BUnit 5AUnit 5BUnit 6AUnit 6BR4-6

Methodology : English is best learned in an environment where the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are integrated around a common theme. In the listening and reading exercises students are exposed to examples of natural, authentic English in order to prepare them for real-life situations. Many opportunities are provided for developing both fluency and accuracy in English through speaking and writing. Students are encouraged to work in pairs or in small groups to discuss the topics presented. The writing activities are based on guided paragraph writing. By the end of the first semester students will be expected to produce a unified and coherent paragraph with a topic sentence stating the main idea. In order to create an environment where English is the medium of communication, students will be expected to use only English in the class.

Course Requirements : Students are expected to attend the classes regularly, to actively participate in all classroom activities, and to submit writing homework when requested. More than six absences will result in FA. Absences due to emergency and sickness may be excused upon the provision of official statement by students.

Evaluation : Grades are based on :

40% Written tests or Quizzes
30% Two oral tests (Mid-term & Final) and Group project
20% Writing assignments
10% Class participation and attendance
