Course Description: This is an intensive writing course at an intermediate level designed to provide students with an opportunity to practice written communication in English. Through exploring different types of essays (expository, argumentative, and analytic prose etc.), students will learn the formats in academic prose, making the course personally relevant. Resume and business letter writing skills will also be introduced.

Textbooks : Writing Academic English: Intermediate by Alice Oshima & Ann Hogue, Longman, 1999

Requirements: : Regular class attendance is required since the objectives of the course are achieved, in great part, by participation in class. The course also requires the understanding of the importance of written English and individual commitment to learning the writing skills.

Assignments: : Students will be expected to write 2-3 one paragraph compositions and 4 formal essays. It is highly recommended that all essays and paragraphs are typed for hand-in. They will have to be revised after returned with the teacher's comments, and submitted again with the original in the following class. A late paper will result in a lower grade (eg. B+ -- B).

Evaluation : Grades are based on :

Four essays 60%
2-3 paragraphs 10 -15%
Essay exams 10 -20%
Attendance and participation 10%
Individual Conference: Individual conference will be held by appointments outside the regular classes when necessary.

Class Schedule : Please look at the schedule page in our class website.
