Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their fluency and accuracy in reading in English. Through reading articles on a variety of themes that are up-to-date, sophisticated, and varied in tone of ideas and issues of wide concern and actively engaging in class discussions, students will develop not only their reading comprehension, reading speed and vocabulary, but their abilities to think critically, to express their opinions more freely, and to organize their ideas so that they can be more clearly expressed.

Textbook: Mosaic 1 Reading 4th Edition by Brenda Wegmann & Miki Knezevic, McGraw Hill
Available in the university bookstore.

Methology: Students will be expected to do the reading assignments and the related exercises outside of class. In class, they will discuss on their reading comprehension and the topics of the reading passages that will give them the opportunity to use the vocabulary and expressions they have learned through the readings, and to develop their critical thinking and communication abilities. Students will also be asked to read additional reading materials other than from the textbook and present them through written summary or oral presentation. In order to create an environment where English is the medium of communication, students will be expected to use only English in the class.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend all classes, to actively participate in the classroom activities, and to submit regular homework assignments. Although the university allows up to four absences, being absent or late will affect their development of English language skills and will most likely result in a lowered grade. Students are responsible for any work missed when they are absent. Also, tests and quizzes cannot be made up.

Evaluation: Grades are based on
50% Written tests or quizzes
20% Oral test and presentation
20% Homework assignments
10% Class participation and attendance
Course Schedule: Please look at the Class Schedule page in this class website.
