| The Green Oaks Service Unit 2003 Brownie Health & Safety Fair was held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at John Young Elementary. This event was hosted by 16 members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 2047, and was attended by 164 Brownies, representing 15 Green Oaks Brownie Troops. It was a great day, despite the sad announcement and moment of silence at the opening ceremonies because of the tragic shuttle disaster.
The day long event included 8 booths that were presented by the 1st year Junior Girl Scouts that covered many areas of Health & Safety to include; Hand washing & healthy teeth, throwing skills, bike safety, car safety, first aid, stretching & kicking fun, playground safety, and how to live a drug fee life. The entire event was produced and presented for the younger Brownie Girl Scouts by the Junior Girl Scouts as their Bronze Award project. Each booths theme was presented with a game, activity, or a small presentation given by the Junior Girl Scouts. The event included lunchtime speakers from local fire and rescue station #58 complete with a tour of the fire truck and EMT vehicle, an area Dentists office, YMCA, Orange County Sheriffs Department, and everyones favorite crime-fighting safety dog McGruff. The Brownies enjoyed the speakers, and were very attentive during all of the presentations, and especially enjoyed the photo opportunity with McGruff. Area businesses were very generous in their contributions for the event, including the items for the goody bags that each of the Brownies received at the end of the day. Each goody bag contained informative activity and coloring books and age appropriate pamphlets, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, an Anti-Drug T-Shirt and bracelet. The Brownie leaders were given posters for each girl, and 8 new bike helmets were given as door prizes to the girls at one of the booths. The Juniors are busy this week writing over 45 thank you notes! One of the highlights for the Brownies was participating in the real-life food pyramid, which was made by the items that were part of the admission to the event. Each troop was given a particular type of food to bring, to make a well-balanced food drive pyramid. The Brownies loved it and it made the food pyramid a bit easier to understand. The 174 food items were donated on behalf of the Service Unit to the Taft Center Community Pantry, and accepted by a spokesman from the Taft Center at the opening ceremonies. |

| By the end of the day, the Brownies earned 2 full Try-Its (Girls Sports & Healthy Habits) 3 requirements of the Safety Sense Try-It, 1 hour sporting activity, of the 2 required, towards the Brownie Girls Sports 2003 patch, 4 of the 6 requirements for the Brownie Safety Award, and the special event patch. Each Brownie leader was also given a special Try-It at home-work, with activities for their next troop meeting, and given the specific requirements that their troop earned with their registration packets. The Brownies were introduced to the traditional Girl Scout hiking snack of GORP, which they helped to make, in the afternoon for snack before the closing ceremonies. The leader evaluations were overwhelmingly positive, and the Brownies were all very well behaved, with no incidents to report. During the Scouts Own following the clean up, the Junior Girl Scouts were all very excited that their hard work, wonderful ideas, and preparation had resulted in such a great day for everyone! Special thanks to all of the troop leaders and parents who helped the girls make it such a special day! |
