Ahhhhh 1975 !!!: I have been waiting for this thread to start. Considered starting one myself. Yes, 1975 uuuhhhmmmmmmmmm. Let me tell you about that from one who was a JW from the late 1960s forward.
My very first Awake! magazine, which I still have, is titled, 'Is it Later than You Think? - What will the 1970s Bring? Oct. 8, 1968. I was just getting into the JWs at that time. That magazine pushed 1975 very hard, along with the Life Everlasting in the Freedom of the Sons of God book. KMs and other talks and materials stressed the date.
The Reg. Pioneer brother who studied with me strongly stated that only the 'weak' and 'immature' ones did not sense the 'urgency' of the times. They did not 'appreciate' that 1975 was a marked year. He said these 'unappreciative' ones who don't accept 1975 as the end date have 'apostate' tendencies and likely will not make it through Armageddon.
POs, COs and DOs and special talks by visiting Boys from Bethel including GB members all pushed the date. They revealed the date in their literature. Now is the 'time' to get into Jehovah's ark of salvation. It may even be too late by 1974. We must not wait until the last year to jump into the truth. Jehovah may not accept last minute entries into the Big-O.
In 1973 I recall Nathan Knorr coming to the San Francisco bay area to give a special talk. KHs everywhere were wired in so we could all listen. I remember our KH was packed out into the street. I sat on the floor with my wife and baby as we listened intently for up to the minute insight from the GB, the Prez himself.
I recall the gas shortages at that time with long lines in major metro areas. Knorr said that the world situation was so tense and ripe, that we might not even make it to 1975. The end could come as soon as mid-1974. I could here him even choked over the speakers, and some who were at the talk site said he had a tear as he spoke.
I can recall in 1974 the Bro. who had earlier studied with me, serving by then as a Special Pioneer, said that some are pooh-poohing 1975, but that they will be shown soon that they were 'weak' and did not appreciate the F&DS provisions. He said that even if we are off some weeks or few months, this system cannot possibly last more than 10 years. He said those words 26 years ago.
I recall a fellow Elder giving a talk where he said to sell the house, sell the car, and sell your wife and kids if necessary in order to serve where the need is great. The end is soooo close. Just months away and mature ones are applying Jehovah's counsel to be busy full time in the preaching work. They have understood the urgency of the times. These wise ones appreciate that 1975 nis a marked year. He said this about the time the KM came out in favor of selling off ones businesses and moving to where the need is.
Now I take it all those 'weak' and 'immature' ones are grown up, and now mature and serving as POs, COs and DOs. Now they can call those who point back to 1975 as a false prophecy and label us apostates. Maybe it is pay-back time for being called all those nasty names before 1975.
The sad thing is, it is a religious system of denial, operating in a totally dysfunctional environment. Many left the Big-O over 1975. I didn't, because I felt that we had enough warning that the date could fail, but only by weeks or months.
I stayed in after that because I thought that the truth was there and that I wanted to show I was big enough and mature enough to accept a failed date like they did in 1914.
Yes, I showed them. I gave another 20 years after that, but I showed them alright. Yeeessss, 1975. I remember that year. It was a very good year. I can even remember saying how those apostates are all hung up over 1975, but we knew it might fail. Yes, we just knew it might.
Now, I look back at nearly 25 years since 1975. And the band keeps on playing. But I am not marching to their tune anymore. Yes, 1975, it was a very good year.
