Milky, maybe I can help answer these questions for you.
"What determines whether someones post is deleted?"
The FPP of the board is supposed to be the backbone of our decision making when it comes to deleting posts. All in all it has been put on the shoulders of the Mods to delete a post if they feel it needs to be removed, whether or not there is an actual spot in the Moderator Action Form for it or not. It's more important to us to actually Moderate the board, rather than worry about simple legalities.
"Awhile back I was deleted for attacking a fellow board
member, which I regret, (I had mixed beer with my nut
meds)and I do apologize. It was inexcusable the things
I said."
Don't sweat it. I think we all get that way sometimes. I think I had to delete myself once. Now THAT'S bad!
"But it seems that there is alot of nasty hateful things said on this board that are not deleted."
The Moderators on this board are only Volunteers. Not paid, Not employed by H2O, No benefits, just something we do in our spare time. Most of the Mods have been here on this board forever and a day. Just giving back to the board a little. So since we are only operating in our spare time, the board doesn't get checked every five seconds. Just whenever one happens to be on and checks it out. As one moderator once said, "I can only delete the posts I read."
"Does senority play a part in this?"
Not supposed to be that way, but it tends to happen at times. Though I have seen, quite a few times, long time members get deleted without a second thought. However, the longer a person is on the board, the better you get to know their personality, the easiest way to tick em off, their mood swings, their writing style, their humor, etc. So sometimes Mods tend to be more lenient if they understand the situation better.
"The longer you've
been a board member, the nastier the remarks?"
Again, it's not supposed to be that way. However, Religion is an extremely touchy, emotional, and personal issue. It tends to bring out the worst in us, and sometimes it's enough, to quote a family member, "To make a preacher cuss."
"I am
truely amazed that there were this many witnesses in
the oraganization who are as intelligent and educated
as the people who post here on this board."
Join the club. I was one too. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. :-)
"For a while
I thought most of the people on this board were ex-members of the writing commitee. Now I realize they were the ones on my judicial committee."
Interesting, ain't it? Funny thing is, unless you know where they live, you never know where most of the participants are from. Or even the lurkers. They could be your next door neighbor! Or people from your old Congregation. Small world!
"If everybody
toned down the put downs the debates could be very
informative."
Tell me about it! I've said it time and again, except for a few loose screws, we have some very intelligent people around here. For people who know so much about debate, the Logical Fallacies (Especially Ad Hominems) seem to fly in every direction. Again I attribute it to the emotional thing. It's a touchy subject, and tends to bring out the worst in us. But I have seen some very good, and almost clean, debates. Very interesting to watch. Wish we could have more of it!
"I guess people like to get nasty. In the
future I will make sure I am in a proper state of mind
before posting."
Hey, we all make mistakes. Not an excuse, but it is a reason. Your honesty and humility is refreshing and is more than welcome on this board. Hope to see you get involved and offer your input from time to time.
Take Care,
