AP,
I agree with the general tenor of responses so far: Encouragement of independant thought and personal responsibility among the JW rank and file is an admirable goal, one I would welcome, but that there is a huge disconnect between that dream and the control that the GB requires to claim entitlement "over all things" as the FDS.
I would like to amplify on a point from your post that was noted by others:
The idea expressed by the KM, at one point, was that we should avoid making use of someone else's research for meeting parts, because we should do our own research, and not have someone else do it for us.... but what seemed to go unnoticed by all those in attendance was that we are in fact making use of someone else's research every time we study the WT or other publications of the Society. Yet, to most if not all those in attendance, it was a "good point." They could not see the contradiction. (Edited only for the sake of brevity)
Among the recipients of this KM, we can call this phenomenon willful blindness, lazy thinking, denial of cognitive dissonance, doublethink, blind faith in leaders, compliance, unity, we can dress it up or down based on our perception of the people involved.
But what can we say about the contradiction in this KM in regard to those who wrote it? I do not lean toward the concept that they too are so blinded that they do not realise the contradiction. I have my own opinions, but I must take great care to not be belittling. What do you think provoked and or excuses the publication of this contradiction?
