I am not misunderstanding.
This is what I think.
Suppose I have five baseballs of five different colors with pails matching these colors on the ground. The pails are placed close to each other. I throw the balls in the air, and even if I attempt to aim, my chances of getting all the balls in their respective colored pail is practicaly impossible.
The term natural selection, and you seem to suggest that by it's nature has a certain control over the results, making things somewhat genetically correct. If natural selection has a deciding effect on what is or not, which laws control it so that we don't experience freaks in the species.
When I use the term natural selection it has to mean that whichever compatible elements out there will sooner or later produce something, which means that somehow we would have dogs with three legs and birds with one wing. Maybe we wouldn't call these dogs and birds but they would still be a life form different than what we usually expect.
The problem with natural selection left by itself is that it doesn't produce freaks and it should. And since it doesn't, it's either intelligent in it's selection or someone intelligent is controlling the selection to avoid mishaps.
