I know an attorney who became an ordained "high priest" by sending in $50 to the Universal Life Church. For $35 they would ordain you; for $50 they would make you a high priest, and for $100 they would make you a Saint!
Once he was ordained, he formed his own church and donated his house to it. His whole scam was to avoid paying property taxes on his house.
Being an attorney he followed the letter of the law. He had a name for his church and twice each week he invited friends over for services. "Services" included partaking of the" sacraments" of great wine and exotic cheese in large quantities. The rest of the "service" consisted of whatever the group wanted to talk about.
The IRS didn't buy it. Dang! I was almost prepared to join, too!
